NELSON MANDELA, a towering figure in modern history and an international symbol of freedom and dignity, passed away today; he was 95. The South African leader, who endured 27 years of imprisonment at the hands of his country's Apartheid regime and then presided over the nation with distinction after the racist system fell, has been celebrated several times in popular song; most recently, U2 contributed this song to the brand-new biopic about Mandela. We offer it with respect and gratitude for the memory of a great man. (12/5p)
