Box Office

YOUR WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Olympics be damned—when it came to the box office this weekend, Americans just wanted to play with LEGOS. The LEGO Movie, with huge brand excitement and bolstered by great reviews, built itself a $69.1 million opening and a high-stacking $18k per-screen average, recouping its budget with interest and blocking out most of the competition. Wonder if they've given any thought to the merchandising. Grown-ups, meanwhile, were undeterred by deadly reviews for George Clooney's The Monuments Men, which snagged second place with $22.7m. The Top 10's only other debut, The Weinstein Company's fangers-at-Hogwarts saga Vampire Academy, bit off just $4.1m.

1. The LEGO Movie Warner Bros. $69.1m 3,775/$18,307 avg. (debut)
2. The Monuments Men Sony $22.7m 3,083/$7.363 avg. (debut)
3. Ride Along Universal $9.4m (-22%) 2,800/$3,355 avg. (week 4)
4. Frozen Walt Disney $6.9m (-23%) 2,460/$2,811 avg. (week 12)
5. That Awkward Moment Focus $5.5m (-37%) 2,809/$1,972 (week 2)

Frozen has now earned about $370m in 12 weeks, second in total gross to only one film in current release, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which has made $422m in the same period, more than thrice what it cost to make. (2/10a)
