Box Office

YOUR WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Movie audiences were playing with their LEGOS again, as the family blockbuster earned the second-biggest third week ever for an animated feature (behind only Shrek 2). With nearly $200m already in the plastic bank, it’s not terribly surprising that a sequel is already in the works (and slated for 2017). New arrivals 3 Days to Kill—possibly Kevin Costner’s last chance to headline an action flick in which he drives something other than a Rascal–and CGI-heavy historical-disaster epic Pompeii fell flat. Meanwhile, Disney's Frozen has now earned a cool $385m in 14 weeks. It’s also worth noting that Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, having hit $423.6m, has become one of the Top 10 all-time domestic box-office champions.

1. The LEGO Movie Warner Bros. $31.5m (-37%) 3,890/$8,085 avg. (week 3)
2. 3 Days to Kill
Relativity $12.3m 2,872/$4,283 avg. (debut)
3. Pompeii
TriStar $10m 2,658/$3,766 avg. (debut)
4. Robocop Sony $9.4m (-57%) 3,372/$2,788 avg. (week 2)
5. The Monuments Men Sony $8.1m (-48%) 3,064/$2,644 avg. (week 3)

The only other debut in the Top 25 was Hiyao Miyazaki’s acclaimed animated feature The Wind Rises, which earned $306k on just 21 screens. That’s an impressive $14,571 per-screen average, in case you don’t have your abacus handy. (2/24a)
