Things That Make Us Say Hmmmmm

THINGS THAT MAKE US GO HMMMM: A few observations and questions that have been bouncing around our brains of late, numbered for your convenience.

1. Capitol's 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) is so much bigger than anyone thinks it is. Soooooooo much bigger.
2. Jhene Aiko, whose Sail Out EP (ARTIUM/Def Jam/IDJ) is quietly approaching 200k sold, is about to become a major name.
3. Do the 30k album buyers who purchase Lorde’s Pure Heroine (Lava/Republic) each week tell the next 30k that it's now their week?
4. When will Top 40 and Hot AC programmers accept that Idina Menzel is a gigantic, mass-appeal pop star and start playing her Academy Award-winning song “Let It Go” from Disney's Frozen? It wasn’t at 1m sold. It wasn’t at 1.5m sold. If the 184k singles sold this week wasn’t the turning point, we can’t possibly guess what that flashpoint will be.
5. And speaking of flashpoints, what do you think happened this week that turned the tide and sent another 5k consumers in to get the Adele album?
