Disney buys Maker

MAKER'S MARK: The Walt Disney Company is purchasing Maker Studios, one of the largest YouTube networks, for $500 million, Reuters reported today, with the price going up to $950m if Maker reaches some predetermined performance benchmarks. The move makes Disney an instant giant in online video distribution and will be key in serving content and marketing its many brands to millennials. Founded in 2009, Maker has 380m+ subscribers around the globe and currently earns about 5.5 billion monthly views. The parties expect to close the deal in Disney's third quarter; the entertainment giant's fiscal year ends in September. (3/24p)
