PACIFIC OCEAN BLUES: “West Coast,” the first single from Lana Del Rey’s forthcoming sophomore album, Ultraviolence (Interscope), is available for purchase at the usual outlets and has also appeared on YouTube in the form of what looks like a Vine video. Like the rest of the album, the intensely moody (what else?) track was produced by Dan Auerbach, continuing a busy stretch during which the Black Keys frontman also helmed Ray LaMontagne’s surprising Supernova, hitting 4/29 on RCA, and co-produced (with Pat Carney and Danger Mouse) the Keys’ own Turn Blue, streeting 5/13 on Nonesuch. The "West Coast" arrangement features an Auerbach electric guitar part that splits the difference between Morricone and "Wicked Games." “The record is finished and it's beautiful; it's so wrong and exquisite,” Del Rey said about Ultraviolence in a statement. "It is absolutely gorgeous, darker than the first.” (4/15a)
