Box Office

YOUR WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Captain America: The Winter Soldier unleashed more heroics in theaters this weekend, fending off animated feature Rio 2 and hitting the $200 million mark. In just two weeks it was not only in the black but had surpassed the entire theatrical run of the first Captain America flick. As for new releases, Good Friday was good for “faith-based” feature Heaven Is for Real, while the Johnny Depp sci-fi thriller Transcendence was less Easter egg than goose egg (particularly given its $100 budget). Horror spoof A Haunted House 2, meanwhile, scared up less in its first frame than its predecessor—but its take was still more than twice what it cost to produce.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier Disney $26.6m (-36%) 3,825/$6,957 avg. (week 3)
2. Rio 2 Fox $22.5m (-43%) 3,975/$5,660 avg. (week 2)
3. Heaven Is for Real TriStar $21.5m 2,417/$8,995 avg. (debut)
4. Transcendence Warner Bros. $11.1m 3,455/$3,227 avg. (debut)
5. A Haunted House 2 Orion $9.1m 2,310/$3,939 avg. (debut)

John Turturro's comedy Fading Gigolo, co-starring Woody Allen, earned a nearly $40k per-screen average in just five venues, meaning we could be in for a wave of middle-age-dude-pimped-out-by-elderly-Jew flicks. (4/21a)
