YOUR X-CELLENT HOLIDAY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: X-Men: Days of Future Past had one of 2014’s strongest debuts, notching up $91.4m for the three-day weekend and $111m counting Friday’s receipts. That tally represents the year’s third best opening behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($91.6 million). Godzilla was a distant second with $31.1m ($39.4m four-day), a steep 67% drop from its opening weekend, dragged down by poor word of mouth. Not surprisingly, Adam Sandler’s Blended, whose trailer suggested that it was unwatchable, stiffed.

1. X-Men: Days of Future Past (Fox) – $91.4m, 3,996/$22,873 avg. (debut)
2. Godzilla (WB) – $31.1m (-67%), 3,952/$7,876 avg. (weekend 2)
3. Blended (WB) – $14.2m, 3,555/$4,003 avg. (debut)
4. Neighbors (Universal) – $13.9m (-45%), 3,266/$4,255 avg. (weekend 3)
5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony) – $7.8m (-54%), 3,160/$2,468 avg. (weekend 4)

The buzz is building for Jon Favreau’s Chef, which earned a solid $2.3m ($2.9m four-day) as it expanded to 498 theaters. More at Box Office Mojo. (5/27a)
