Apple day 1

YOSEMITE SUM: Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference kicked off today without a splashy Beats presentation. But it bring news of upgraded operating systems iOS8 and OS X Yosemite, many of which appeared designed to lure back defectors to Android phones and other devices with expanded features and interoperability. Among the innovations: HomeKit and HealthKit suites for home and health monitoring, respectively; family sharing; Handoff, to allow easy navigation of documents from mobile to desktop and back again; expanded functions for Siri that include Shazam and iTunes listening/purchasing; iCloud Drive, for easier online storage and access; audio messaging on the fly while texting; and a bunch of programmer tools we couldn't begin to understand. After the presentation, participants talked heatedly about "inverse kinematics," drank a lot of Mountain Dew and didn't get laid. (6/2p)
