Box Office

YOUR WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: You maniacs! You blew it up! By which we mean Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Fox's simian sci-fi sequel easily ruled the weekend box office with $73 million, driven by great reviews and word of mouth—not to mention the prior outing's ongoing popularity. All told, though, ticket sales were down against the same weekend last year; indeed, Entertainment Weekly glumly asked in a recent issue if this was the "worst movie summer ever." Clearly they've forgotten the summer of 1994, which yielded such tentpole flicks as The Shadow and Color of Night. Pee-yew.

  1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Fox $73m 3,967/$18,402 avg. (debut)
  2. Transformers: Age... Paramount $16.5m (-56%) 3,913/$4,217 avg. (week 3)
  3. Tammy WB $12.9m (-40%) 3,465/$3,726 avg. (week 2)
  4. 22 Jump Street Sony $6.7m (-32%) 2,811/$2,383 avg. (week 5)
  5. How to ... Dragon 2 Fox $5.9m (-35%) 2,885/$2,033 avg. (week 5)

America clearly needs a laugh. In its fifth week, Sony's 22 Jump Street has made $172m, whereas WB's Tammy has tripled its budget in two frames and will likely quadruple it before transitioning to home screens. Just inside the Top 20, Richard Linklater's acclaimed cinematic experiment Boyhood (out via IFC) bowed with a ridiculous $72k per-screen average. And if we may editorialize, Radius-TWC's indie sci-fi outing Snowpiercer, still under the radar theatrically (though it's the #1 movie at iTunes), is one of the wildest things we've ever seen.
