THE GARTH FILES: Last week's announcement of Garth Brooks' return to the majors—in the form of a splashy new Sony deal, with an album on RCA Nashville due on Black Friday, and a big ol' tour—left more than a few unanswered questions. Although Brooks said he'd be putting his music up for download for the first time via his own site (pointedly not iTunes), it was unclear from the press conference how much the label was participating in that piece of the pie. It turns out Sony does have digital rights, and will be handling the back end on the digital side in addition to releasing the physical product. Several observers have suggested that only full albums will be made available for download; Brooks' refusal to unbundle was a primary reason he never went with iTunes in the past. (7/14a)
