Chart preview

CHART PREVIEW: The battle for #1 heated up late last week and over the weekend, as RCA and Atlantic competed to give their respective artists, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Jason Mraz, a career-first #1 album. Using Amazon Digital as a vehicle, the labels temporarily lowered the price of each new release to $5.99. As of this morning, Mraz is still sale-priced, but Yankovic’s album, which is back to regular price, is on top. At iTunes, it’s currently the reverse, with Mraz in the lead and Yankovic at #3. Will this strategy give Mraz, who was trailing Yankovic by only a few thousand units at midweek, the additional push to reach #1? Or will Yankovic, who has already doubled initial expectations, continue to build? Can either album hit 100k? Keep an eye on our Building Sales Chart for clues. (7/21a)
