Box Office

YOUR WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: The latest dystopian Young Adult adaptation, Fox’s The Maze Runner, sprinted to the top of the box-office heap in its opening frame, while the bow of dark Liam Neeson thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones, unsurprisingly, fell short of the star’s recent action vehicles. Another debut, the family comedy This Is Where I Leave You, also underperformed. Meanwhile, Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy landed at #6; more importantly, it became the fourth top-grossing Marvel flick, after The Avengers and two entries in the Iron Man trilogy.

  1. The Maze Runner (Fox) $32.5m 3,604/$9,018 avg. (debut)
  2. A Walk Among the Tombstones (Universal) $13.1m 2,712/$4,840 avg. (debut)
  3. This Is Where I Leave You (Warner Bros.) $11.9m 2,868/$4,135 avg. (debut)
  4. No Good Deed (Screen Gems) $10.2m (-58%) $4,690/2,175 avg. (week two)
  5. Dolphin Tale 2 (Warner Bros.) $9m (-43%) $2,463/3,656 avg. (week two)

Meanwhile, Kevin Smith’s cult-horror outing Tusk bombed, taking in less than $900k on 602 screens. The title may have led moviegoers to expect a film version of the Fleetwood Mac album. (9/22a)
