Walking Dead breaks cable record

THE ZOMBIES' TIME OF THE SEASON: Speaking of numbers, here’s one that got our attention: 17.3 million. That’s how many people watch the season premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead Sunday night. According to the experts, that total broke the record for a non-sports telecast on cable TV, beating previous record-holder High School Musical 2 on the Disney Channel. What's more, AMC estimates that DVR viewing will bring the total to 22m. The fact that the episode was up against NBC’s mighty Sunday Night Football in the Eastern half of the U.S. and beat it by 2.5m tells you how popular The Walking Dead has become; it also indicates that the Eagles’ massacre of the Giants was definitely not must-see TV. And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming. (10/14a)
