HE’S DA MANN AT BMG

Veteran A&R Exec, Songwriter, Producer Billy Mann Grabs President of Creative Job

We told you it was about to happen, and dagnabbit, it just did.

Fresh from his top A&R job at EMI Music, Billy Mann has been named President of Creative for BMG North America, reporting to CCO Richard Blackstone.

Mann will oversee the creative staff, and roster integration of recently acquired companies as well as leading efforts to attract, develop and sign new talent.

He joins the rights management company from EMI, where he was President of International, New Music and President of Global Artist Management.

BMG’s recent acquisitions include Crosstown Songs America, Cherry Lane Music Publishing Inc., Stage Three Music and Evergreen Copyrights as well as a number of prominent artists and songwriters.

Said Blackstone: “Billy will be a great asset to our leadership team. He is one of the few people in our industry who has experienced the creative journey from all sides. Artists and their managers who have worked with him know they have a trusted advocate in Billy and industry executives know they are dealing with someone who has successfully combined entrepreneurial independence and creativity with stamina and ambition.”

Added BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch: “Billy’s terrific energy, full-spectrum experience, and first-hand knowledge of the marketplace is ideally suited to help us grow and expand as we build further inroads into North America and around the world. And he's promised to introduce me to P!nk.”

Said Mann: “It is truly refreshing to be part of an aligned leadership team of music lovers committed to building a powerful and transparent alternative for artists and the industry. The opportunity to help grow the company in this spirit with Hartwig, Richard and the BMG community around the world is incredible, not just because I believe in the strategy, but because of the belief in these values across the entire company. Now give me a G, a bouncy G…”

Mann began his career as a troubadour singer/songwriter and studio musician, signing with the A&M Records imprint DV8 in 1993. Following two solo releases, he began writing and producing with/for many of the biggest recording artists in the world, including P!nk, Robyn, Take That, Sting, Ricky Martin, Backstreet Boys, Anastacia, Celine Dion, Kelly Rowland, Hall & Oates, the Jonas Brothers, Joss Stone, Flex, Art Garfunkel and Martina MacBride. He has been P!nk’s longest standing collaborator, working on her last four releases including the Grammy-nominated hit “Stupid Girls,” “God is a DJ,” “Dear Mr. President,” and “Bad Influence.” His most recent Top 10 single as a producer/songwriter was her acclaimed hit, “Glitter in the Air”.

In 2001, Mann founded New York-based Stealth Entertainment. Under his leadership, Stealth grew a roster of multiple Grammy-nominated and winning songwriters, producers and mixing engineers, collaborating with artists such as Rod Stewart, Jessica Simpson, P!nk, Alejandro Sanz, Vanessa Amorosi and Wyclef Jean, building brand partnerships with organizations including Seventeen Magazine, then-Senator Barack Obama, Target and Levi’s, among others.

Stealth Entertainment was acquired by EMI Music in 2007, with Mann joining EMI Music as a creative advisor and member of the company’s operating board. He was appointed Chief Creative Officer in 2008, and was named President of New Music A&R International and President of Global Artist Management in 2009, overseeing new music content and artist management initiatives internationally. During his tenure at EMI Music, Mann oversaw the development of David Guetta, Bebe, Juan Luis Guerra, Tiziano Ferro, Robyn, Panda, Paty Cantu, Empire of the Sun, Helene Fischer, and label partners Wind-up and Movic.

Mann has also consulted for various music and entertainment companies throughout his career including Sony Music, BMG International, Sony Pictures Television, Zomba Music and Warner/Chappell.
