Universal Republic Soundtrack Heads Five Columbia Albums in Top Six
The Hunger Games opened to a record-shattering $152 million gross at the box office last weekend, propelling the Universal Republic soundtrack into the top position on HITS’ Album sales chart, with a robust 180k.

The T Bone Burnett-produced album features tracks by Taylor Swift, The Civil Wars, Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, Miranda Lambert, Maroon 5, the Low Anthem and Kid Cudi, among others.

It was the only album to stop Columbia Records, which had 12 chart-topping weeks in a row, as Team Stringer/Barnett scored the next five entries, including debuts by The Shins (#3) and L.A. hip-hop collective Odd Future (#5). Adele’s XL/Columbia Grammy winner 21 (#2) adds another 130k to its total, now at 8.3 million, while last week’s #1 by Syco/Columbia U.K. boy band One Direction is now #4 and Bruce Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball is #6.

SRC/Universal Republic’s Melanie Fiona (#7) and Concord’s Grammy Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding (#10) are the other newcomers to the Top 10, which is rounded out by RCA’s Whitney Houston Greatest Hits (#8) and Capitol/EMI’s Now 41 (#9).

Atlantic’s Diggy, son of Run-DMC rapper Reverend Run, debuts at #11 with his major label bow, as does Walt Disney’s Shake It Up: Live 2 Dance (#17), 19/BNA’s Casey James (#24) and Bad Boy/Interscope’s MGK (#37).

Big Beat’s Skrillex album, Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites, re-enters the Top 50 at #49.

Interscope’s Lana Del Rey tops the list of double-digit gainers, moving #31-25, +24%, followed by Startime/Columbia’s Foster the People (#50-34, +14%) and Capitol Nashville/EMI’s Eric Church (#32-29, +10%).

Hitting stores this week are Interscope’s Madonna, Atlantic’s Shinedown, Mercury Nashville’s Lionel Richie, Interscope’s All American Rejects, Island Def Jam’s My Darkest Days, Capitol’s Katy Perry deluxe Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection and Universal Republic’s Dev.
