Erica Returns to Throw Goat for Some Scintillating Young Rock Units

Erica here…again. I just couldn’t keep quiet this week, either, so I’ve locked Jesse into the copy room while I sneak my two cents into this weeks’ jam-packed ROCK edition of Wheels. Don’t worry, though; Jesse’s iPhone(or gadget of the week) is never far from his pocket, so continue to feed him the latest and greatest. Check out Jesse’s interview with Christian Brucculeri, who’s behind the new killer app Crowdstream; Download the app for iTunes here or get it directly from Crowdstream. And keep feedin’ the inbox: [email protected]

SPOTLIGHT
Dead Sara
(http://deadsara.com): If this is the first time you’re seeing this name, I hate to be the one to tell you, but you’re behind the curve. Managed by Michael Goldberg and Isaac Heymann (108 Management), this half-female rock outfit has been covering the L.A. scene, making their mark with a wicked residency at Bardot and lining up fans outside the club along the way. Now, their Viper Room residency, beginning this week, kicks off their Northwest tour with Bush; they head out on Sept. 13. Lead singer Emily Armstrong channels Etheridge, Joplin and Vedder and is the kind of talent that captivates from the moment she steps onstage. Their single, “Weatherman,” just got added to WCCC in Hartford, and the new video is available for viewing here. I’ve had a chance to preview the debut record out next month and can say that these songs are rich with passion, angst, truth and the propulsion that makes you want to be a part of something, whatever it is.

Gemini Syndrome

Gemini Syndrome has been filling the Roxy and Troubadour the last few months and has become the first hard rock/metal band to be signed off the renewed Sunset Strip in recent memory. You can check out their Tool-influenced-industrial active rock online or at their next Key Club gig on Oct. 10. And yes, the singer is an actual albino.

The band will be on tour from Sept. 6 to Oct. 16 with Get Scared, and will be releasing their debut full-length in 2012. EMAIL Q&A WITH CROWDSTREAM CO-FOUNDER/CEO CHRISTIAN BRUCCULERI
Christian, tell everyone a little about Crowdstream and how you came up with the idea.
We created Crowdstream as a place where artists can connect directly with fans at and around live events. As we saw the growth of check-in services, really amazing broad platforms like Foursquare grow, we wanted to build a network on top of the check-in behavior that serviced the unique needs of concertgoers and the bands who provide the overall experience. For example, we thought it would be cool to check in at a show and be greeted with an exclusive social video from the artist, so we built a platform that allows artists to communicate directly with the fans, and allows fans to communicate with one another, all through mobile.

Had you been involved with bands at all before this?
I was the Director of Artist Management for Zen Media Group for several years. I had an amazing experience working with bands like Anthrax, Mudvayne, Hellyeah, Otep, Bloodsimple and Krista. I also learned a lot about the needs of artists, and their specific needs around touring. We built this product around a lot of those learnings and bands seem to really enjoy what we've built.

How can bands join in? Is it just for signed artists?
It's not only for singed artists, but we're currently working mostly with national and international acts. We're in the process of building out a self-service platform for artists to build and manage their mobile communities. Right now the best way to get started is to email us at [email protected].

What are you hoping to provide for bands, fans, etc.? What makes your company stand out?
For bands, we want to build a network of engaged fans that can be leveraged for mobile-only experiences. We think that by building a network of users, bands can join a conversation that's already in-progress, instead of having to create one on their own. For fans, we want to create a new, fun way to interact with their favorite artists and one another. We believe that Crowdstream is the most engaging live music application on the market, and the bands that we've worked with prove it. For example, the Motley Crüe tour that we supported was a phenomenal success; the engagement rates on that tour were through the roof. This was a function of getting the band and their team involved, and giving the fans a platform to communicate at the shows. We're looking to build on our early successes and continue to deliver the best live entertainment experience for fans.

Favorite TV show and why?
I would have to say that True Blood and Boardwalk Empire are my current favorites. You know, HBO just makes great, engaging television. They're the Crowdstream of TV!
