KATY LEADS THE WAY WITH NINE VMA NOMINATIONS

Divas Will Loom Large at This Year’s Festivities
The telegenic Katy Perry is the leading nominee for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with nine, including Best Pop Video, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, Best Special Effects Video of the Year, for her "Firework" clip.

"I have nine nominations!" Perry shouted when she heard about her noms from MTV NewsSway during Wednesday night’s on-air nominations telecast. "Nine? I thought that was a typo or something! Omigod, really? That’s the most nominations I’ve ever gotten for anything."

Right behind her is this year’s runaway sales leader, Adele, who scored seven noms for "Rolling in the Deep," the only single or video thus far from 21, putting her up against Perry in the Video of the Year and Best Pop Video categories.

In this, the year of the diva (just like the last four or five), Katy and Adele got by far the most love, at least at the nominations stage. Their rivals Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj snagged three nominations apiece. Beyoncé and Gaga have dominated the VMAs in years past, topped by Gaga’s record-breaking 13 nods last year.

Kanye West matched Adele with seven nods, split between the clips for "All of the Lights" and "Power." These include a double in Best Collaboration for "Lights" with Rihanna and Kid Cudi and his cameo in Perry’s "E.T."

Relative newcomer Bruno Mars came on strong with four noms, including the biggie for “Grenade,” while Eminem and Thirty Seconds to Mars each racked up three, the latter in technical categories for their groundbreaking "Hurricane" epic.

Double nominees include the Beastie Boys, Chris Brown and Pitbull, as well as newcomers Tyler, the Creator; Foster the People; and Manchester Orchestra. Speaking of rookies, Mumford & Sons are in the running for Best Rock Video.

The voting is now on at vma.mtv.com or m.mtv.com on mobile phones. The show airs from the Nokia Theatre on Aug, 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
