PREORDERING BEGINS FOR COLDPLAY’S MYLO XYLOTO

As Album Zooms Into iTunes Top 10, Capitol Services New Single “Paradise”
As the future of EMI hangs in the balance, one of the company’s biggest acts is conducting business as usual, counting down to the release of a hugely important album.

The album preorder for Coldplay’s fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto (Capitol), hitting on Monday, Oct. 25, in the U.S.—putting it in sync with the worldwide release date in all other territories—begins today at the iTunes Store, where it’s sitting at #10 as this is written. Everyone who preorders the album will instantly receive a download of "Paradise," the second single, which will be available for purchase in the U.S. following the Tuesday changeover. The track is also being serviced to radio today.

"[The new songs] suggest Coldplay's forthcoming album may be more gritty, fun, strange and (yes) danceable than any so far," Rolling Stone recently noted. Our own Roy Trakin offered his take on live versions of five of the new songs, which the band unveiled in early August at UCLA, writing that “it’s hard not to get caught up in the group’s beaming joy and Chris Martin’s perpetual eagerness to please. Opening up with ‘MX’ (which has been called the abbreviated title track of the new album) into ‘Hurts Like Heaven’ that they performed at their recent knockout Glastonbury set, spiked with Jonny Buckland’s chiming riffs, Guy Berryman’s elastic, cushioning bass and Will Champion’s pummeling percussion, Coldplay showcased five new songs in all, including the already classic single, ‘Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,’ and ‘Charlie Brown,’ both of which were taped for telecast later that evening. ‘Major Minus,’ another Glastonbury selection, with its Stones-y ‘Sympathy for the Devil’-like ‘ooo-ooos’ and admonition, ‘Be careful where you stand,’ appears to be yet one more standout from the new album."

In this morning’s announcement, "Us Against The World" is described as “delicate,” while "Princess of China" features vocals by Rihanna.

Coldplay will undoubtedly break out additional new material during the band’s headlining performances at Austin City Limits (9/16), the iHeart Radio Music Festival in Vegas and Music Midtown in Atlanta O(9/24). The album art was inspired by the work of New York graffiti artists of the 1970s. Along with the standard configurations, Mylo Xyloto will be available as a special limited-edition pop-up album. The band's last LP, 2008's Viva La Vida, debuted at #1 in 36 countries, including the U.S. and the U.K.
