SUPER BOWL'S SOUNDS OF MUSIC

Echo & the Bunnymen, James Brown, Motley Crue, The Animals, Yello, Melanie Amaro and Elton John Among the Musical Highlights of Commercial Spots
Yesterday's Super Bowl in Indianapolis wasn't just about the victorious Giants' Eli Manning throwing to Mario Manningham, Madonna's cheerleader outfit, Kelly Clarkson crooning the national anthem or M.I.A.'s middle finger. And, oh yeah, my exact prediction of the Giants 21- Patriots 17 final score (see here). If I only put my money where my mouth was...

Instead, it was a veritable cornucopia of music placements in the big game's celebrated commercials, from Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" in a vampire-themed spot for Audi and a mash-up of The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary" and Flo Rida's #1 smash, "Good Feelin'" in a Budweister ad to the celebrated Melanie Amaro/Elton John/Flavor Flav triumvirate for Pepsi and Yello's "Oh Yeah" in a spoof of Ferris Bueller's Day Off for Honda-CRV with that film's star Matthew Broderick.

Reaching a world-wide audience topping 110 million is no small feat for America's advertisers, with agencies, music publishers and supervisors alike looking to capture the hearts, minds, and pocketbooks of consumers planted in front of their TV sets for the big game.

Some of the other highlights:

*Barry Manilow's 1977 Richard Kerr-Will Jennings-penned hit, "Looks Like We Made It" used as a backdrop for Chevy Silverado's notion of a Ford-bashing apocalypse, with only Twinkies surviving the wreckage.

*James Brown's funky "Get Up Offa That Thing" as the soundtrack for a dog losing weight in a memorable Volkswagen bit.

*Fueled by Ramen band fun.'s "We Are Young" for Chevy Sonic's "Stunt Anthem" sky-diving spot, featuring an appearance by OK Go. The band's "Needing/Getting" stunt video is being sponsored by Chevy.

*Heavy metal vets The Darkness, who appear as themselves, with "I Believe In a Thing Called Love" for Samsung Galaxy Note Superphones.

*The Animals' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" accompanying soccer star David Beckham in his underwear for H&M.

*Maino featuring Swizz Beats' "Million Bucks" in an ad for NFL properties.

*Avicii's Etta James-sampled "Levels" for Bud Light Platinum.

*The Chordettes' "Mr. Sandman" juxtaposed with Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart" for KIA.

* Vampire Weekend's "Campus" in the trailer for the Dr. Seuss: The Lorax movie.

*And what would the evening be without at least more exposure for LMFAO, who appeared with Madonna on the halftime show and had their "Sexy and I Know It" used for an M&M spot along with a voice-over by Vanessa Williams.
