The Legendary 85-Year-Old Crooner’s New Duets II Album Hits Sept. 20 with a Flurry of Promotional Activities

Tony Bennett is the busiest 85-year-old on the planet.

The legendary’s crooner’s upcoming RPM/Columbia album Duets II, which goes to retail outlets on Sept. 20, will be accompanied by a promotional blitz that would be daunting for someone a quarter his age.

The new release is a sequel to his three-time Grammy-winning 2006 album Duets: An American Classic, featuring Paul McCartney, Elton John, Billy Joel and Sting, among others, which turned out to the most successful of his career, debuting at #3 with more than 202k sold and going on to 1.7 million in sales. It marked his 80th birthday. The Rob Marshall NBC documentary about the making of the album, Tony Bennett: An American Classic, earned 7 Emmy Awards.

Duets II
features, most notably, Bennett’s duet with the late Amy Winehouse, who recorded the jazz standard “Body And Soul” with him at London’s Abbey Road Studios in March, and now stands as her final performance. The single will be available on iTunes next Tuesday (9/14), which is Winehouse’s birthday, with proceeds going to the Amy Winehouse Foundation set up by her parents to help victims of drug abuse. The clip bows across all MTV formats the same day.

The album also includes duets with Lady Gaga (“The Lady is a Tramp”), John Mayer (“One for my Baby”), Carrie Underwood (“It Had to be You”), Norah Jones (“Speak Low”), Sheryl Crow (“The Girl I Love”) and Andrea Bocelli (“Stranger in Paradise”), among others. Every recording session was filmed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Dion Beebe [Memoirs of a Geisha, Green Lantern] for a documentary, The Zen of Bennett, scheduled for release next spring.

The set-up, orchestrated by manager, son Danny Bennett and longtime music marketing exec Jay Krugman, leaves no stone unturned.

A feature on ABC’s 20/20 gets the blitz underway, previewed this morning on Good Morning America. That will be followed tomorrow night by a performance on Home Shopping Network.

Next Wednesday (9/14), Tony will join Queen Latifah on the America’s Got Talent finale with Queen Latifah, while the following day, Thursday (9/15), he’ll team up with headliner Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion for a free Concert in Central Park with the New York Philharmonic, which is being filmed for a PBS special to air in December.

On Sunday (9/18), Bennett will join Aretha Franklin, Elton John and Alejandro Sanz for a performance at the Metropolitan Opera House, before hosting as benefit for his own Exploring the Arts Foundation benefiting music education that night in a tent outside the hallowed venue, hosted by Alec Baldwin. By Monday (9/19) morning 8 a.m., he’ll be discussing lesbians with Howard Stern on Sirius XM, then singing “America the Beautiful” a cappella before 80,000 fans for the N.Y. Giants’ home opener on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

Then it’s NBC's The Today Show Tuesday (9/20), The View on Wednesday (9/21), and a special Friday (9/23) performance on CBSTom Selleck-starring series Blue Bloods with Carrie Underwood, followed by an appearance on that evening’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Tony will celebrate his 85th birthday at L.A.’s Staples Center Saturday night (9/24) featuring his duet partners Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder and John Mayer.

Look for appearances at S.F.’s AT&T park the following Tuesday (9/27) and Jon Stewart on Thursday (9/29). Bennett also taped a Piers Morgan interview and has a planned Vanity Fair photo shoot with Lady Gaga.

Then it's off to Europe for a series of dates there.
