M83, GOTYE, LANA DEL REY FEEL NEW YEAR’S VIBE

This year’s first batch of new entries to HITS Vibe-Raters' crop of breakthrough artists include a veteran French art-rocker, an Aussie multi-instrumentalist and a sleek PoMo diva.

M83, Gotye and Lana Del Rey make their way into the spotlight, as the first touts of 2012.

Mute/EMI Label Services act M83 is French musician Anthony Gonzalez, who has been making his hybrid mix of electronic and guitar rock, featuring reverb effects and lyrics whispered softly over loud instrumentals, for a decade, influenced by the likes of techno pioneer Jean Michel Jarre. The new double-album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, which came out last August, was voted #1 in Pitchfork’s reader’s poll, as was the single, “Midnight City,” now starting to see nice gains at PoMo radio, including KROQ and Sirius XM Alt Nation. He’ll be apparing at sold-out L.A. dates at Nokia Jan. 12-13, with a Carson Daly slot slated for Feb. For the complete Vibe entry, click here.

Fairfax/Universal Republic act Gotye is the stage name of Australian singer Wouter “Wally” De Backer, who was previously in the Melbourne indie-pop band, The Basics. Having earned a number of ARIA awards, the Ausssie Grammy, as well as an MTV nomination as Best Asian and Pacific Act, Gotye’s Making Mirrors is his third album, but first for the U.S., scheduled to hit Jan. 31. The first single, “Somebody That I Used to Know,” featuring Kimbra, has an insinuating, sparing feel that recalls Sting’s work with the Police, as well as a terrific video that has already grabbed 30 million YouTube hits. It’s already blowing up at PoMo and Triple A radio, including KROQ, KNDD, 91X, KYSR, KITS, WXRT, KFOG, etc. Look for sold-out dates at L.A.’s El Rey Feb. 2 and N.Y.’s Bowery Ballroom Feb. 6, with a Kimmel appearance Feb. 1. Interscope’s Lana Del Rey is so hot, there’s already backlash to the backlash, and her first album, Born to Die, isn’t even coming out until Jan. 31. The N.Y.-based diva, who is already breaking big on the Continent, is haunting like Julee Cruise crooning the theme to a David Lynch movie. The first single, “Video Games,” is already a viral YouTube smash with 16 million online views, while the clip for the album title track has added another 8 million. She’s the musical guest on Saturday Night Live Jan. 14, and Triple A and Non Com radio is already aboard, with early PoMo adopters including KITS and KRXP. Check the full entry here.
