MOON RISING, LIPS LOCK AT MTV MOVIE AWARDS

Twilight Saga Grabs Five Golden Popcorns as MTV Generation Award Winner Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson Smooch
Vampires and kisses dominated last night’s 2010 MTV Movie Awards ceremony.

With Tom Cruise’s Tropic Thunder character Les Grossman leading the way, the network’s annual awards show, which doubles as a preview of the summer blockbuster, awarded five Golden Popcorns to The Twilight Saga: New Moon, including Best Movie, presented by Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Robert Pattinson won two statues for “Best Male Performance” and MTV’s newest category “Global Superstar,” in recognition of his universal appeal. Co-star Kristen Stewart took the top spot for the second year in a row for “Best Female Performance.”

The evening’s highlight was the first televised appearance by Sandra Bullock since winning an Oscar for The Blind Side. Receiving a standing ovation, Bullock was presented with the career-spanning “MTV Generation Award” by Betty White and Bradley Cooper, along with Scarlett Johansson, whose real-life husband Ryan Reynolds was nominated in the “Best Kiss” category with Bullock for The Proposal. That prompted a steamy kiss between Bullock and Johansson which recalled such previous MTV award busses as Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley, and Madonna and Britney Spears.

Cruise’s Grossman was a big presence, ranting against Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Will and Jaden Smith and Michael Cera before a surprise dance number with Jennifer Lopez.

The bleep-laden telecast was hosted by comic Aziz Ansari, who inserted himself into scenes from The Blind Side and Precious before being brought on-stage by Justin Bieber. Aziz performed a new Avatar-themed song by way of his ongoing parodies of R. Kelly, in which he slammed British Petroleum for the oil spill in the Gulf.

Other winners included The Hangover, which grabbed two awards, with Zach Galifianakis winning “Best Comedic Performance” and Ken Jeong being honored with “Best WTF Moment.” The “Badass” award of the night went to Rain for his performance in Ninja Assassin, and Amanda Seyfried took home “Best Scared As S**t Performance” in Jennifer’s Body. “Best Breakout Star” went to Anna Kendrick for her performance in Up in the Air. The “Villain” award went to Tom Felton for his role as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Beyoncé Knowles and Ali Larter won “Best Fight” for their onscreen slap fest in Obsessed.

The Hangover star Ed Helms, dressed as a cloud, crooned “Stu’s Gong,” while a tiger-leotart-clad Jeong essayed a ballet solo, before both were booted from the stage by Grossman.

The evening’s musical performances included Katy Perry surfing onto the stage to perform her latest single, “California Gurls,” joined by Snoop Dogg, who rolled out on his own personal oasis amidst a puff of smoke.

Christina Aguilera’s multi-media extravaganza featured a medley of “Bionic,” “Not Myself Tonight” and “Woohoo” from her upcoming album.

Sneak peaks were shown of two of the summer’s most anticipated releases, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

The lineup of presenters included Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner; the cast of Grown Ups (Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider); Paul Rudd; Jason Segel; Anna Kendrick; Christopher Mintz-Plasse; Aubrey Plaza; Cruise and Diaz; Zac Efron; Jonah Hill; Jessica Biel; Bradley Cooper; Steve Carell; Miranda Cosgrove; Shaun White; Vanessa Hudgens; Sean “Diddy” Combs; Russell Brand; Will Ferrell; Mark Wahlberg; Johansson and White; Samuel L.
