GRAMMY RACE GETS UNDERWAY WITH BEYONCE, TAYLOR SWIFT ON TOP

Beyonce has 10 Noms, Taylor Swift Eight, With Black Eyed Peas, Maxwell and Kanye Six Apiece, David Guetta, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga Five
A pair of divas, Beyonce and Taylor Swift, were the big winners in tonight’s announced nominations for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on CBS, Jan. 31, live (except on the west coast) from L.A.’s Staples Center.

In a nationally televised concert event tonight, The Recording Academy unveiled the nominees, which were topped by Beyonce with 10 nods and Taylor Swift with eight.

Both are up for Album of the Year, along with The Black Eyed PeasThe E.N.D., Lady Gaga’s The Fame and dark horse Dave Matthews Band’s Big Whiskey and the Groograux King, a tribute to their late bandmate, founding member LeRoi Moore.

Those nominations are a boost for Interscope head Jimmy Iovine, who has shepherded both The Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga to stardom. In all, the Peas grabbed six nominations, along with Maxwell and Kanye West, while David Guetta, Jay-Z and Lady Gaga each earned five. Colbie Caillat, Michael Giacchino, Kings of Leon, John Newton, Lady Gaga producer RedOne, Bruce Springsteen, T-Pain and Keith Urban nabbed four apiece.

Beyonce, Swift and Gaga will go at it in the Record of the Year category, where “Halo,” “Poker Face” and “You Belong With Me,” respectively, will also be challenged by the Black Eyed Peas’ upbeat “I Gotta Feeling” and Kings of Leon’s sole rock entry, “Use Somebody.”

In Song of the Year, the award for writers, it’ll be the three gals again, with Gaga and RedOne’s “Poker Face” and Swift and Liz Rose’s “You Belong With Me” up against Beyonce, et. al’s “(Single Ladies) Put a Ring on It,” Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” and Maxwell’s “Pretty Wings” (written by Hod David and Muzse).

In Best New Artist, the category Lady Gaga was eliminated from because she received a nomination last year, the contenders were no surprise: Zac Brown Band, Keri Hilson, MGMT, Silversun Pickups and The Ting Tings.

Said Portnow: "The nominations this year truly reflect the talented community of music makers who represent some of the highest levels of excellence in their respective fields. Once again, the Grammy Awards process has yielded a well-rounded and diverse group of impressive nominees across multiple genres. We’re off to an exciting start."

Other factoids:

Colbie Caillat not only got nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album for her own album Breakthrough, but she’s also up for two Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals on two different duets, one with Taylor Swift (“Breathe”), the other with Jason Mraz (“Lucky”).

Kelly Rowland grabbed a Best Dance Recording nod for her collaboration with David Guetta, “When Love Takes Over”

Crystal Method got another nod in the Best Electronic Dance Album category, where they will go up against a typically eclectic field of Lady Gaga, David Guetta, LMFAO and Pet Shop Boys.

Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty and Prince go for the alter cocker award in the Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.

Daryl Hall and John Oates, who have amazingly never won a Grammy, get their first nomination since 1983 in Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals for “Sara Smile,” a 33-year-old song they revived on their Live at the Troubadour album.

Glassnote's Phoenix got a nod in the Best Alternative Music Album field along with David Byrne and Brian Eno's Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, an album that only came out in digital form.

Andy Samberg's Lonely Island and T-Pain earned a nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "I'm on a Boat," where they'll go up against Beyonce and Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rihanna and Keri Hilson, among others.

They may have eliminated the Polka category, but that didn't prevent Jimmy Sturr and his Orchestra from nabbing his 1,287,287 nomination, this one for Best Traditional Folk Album.
