A SUPER-SONIC WHEELS 2.0

Next Week We Dig Into the Co-Winners; This Week We Take a Look at the Semi-Finalists

The Wheels Losers come atcha this week with some talented artists who made the semi-finals in our Sonicbids contest. We think they deserve some attention and would love to know what you think about them. Next week, we’ll go into detail about our two winners. But right now let’s take a look at three acts that stuck out big-time as we were listening to nearly 300 submissions:

Byron Zanos: This award-winning singer/songwriter from New Jersey in the vein of John Mayer has played alongside Steve Miller, Aerosmith, Sheryl Crow, James Blunt and more. Byron began writing songs as a 9-year-old and hasn’t stopped since. (www.byronzanos.com)

Sweatshop Union: A hip-hop collective from Vancouver who transformed into a group, SU’s style leans toward the left-of-center mode of early Jurassic 5. The early press has been rapturous, and music supervisors have taken to them as well, featuring them in dozens of shows and videogames, which has led to international exposure. This is one of the hardest-working groups in the underground hip-hop scene, and one of the most intriguing. (www.sonicbids.com/sweatshopunionmusic)

Mieka Pauley: This Boston native is a cerebral singer/songwriter with a rock edge who deals with the complexities of maintaining relationships, the challenge of rising to the moment and the importance of learning from the past. Meika has been compared to Ben Harper, Cat Power and Neko Case, which should give you an idea where she’s coming from. And she’s dedicated as evidenced by more than 700 shows during the last five years. (www.mieka.com)
