MICHAEL JACKSON LIVES… ON SCREEN

MTV Acquires U.S. TV Rights to This Is It, Disney to Revive Captain EO
Michael Jackson is alive and well and living on movie and TV screens everywhere.

MTV Networks has acquired the exclusive U.S. television rights to air This Is It in 2011 for a six-year network window.

Sony Pictures’ concert documentary has garnered U.S. box office receipts of $67 million through last weekend, and a worldwide total of more than $222 million.

“This film is a true testament to Michael’s musical genius, passion and commitment to his craft,” said MTV Networks President Van Toffler. “Michael Jackson has always been inextricably tied to our viewers as they witnessed his evolution from a talented performer to a global icon who redefined music. Now, with this film, we can help give his fans a chance to see his final performance."

In other Michael news, it appears the late superstar is going back to Disneyland. The theme park is planning to revive his 1986 3D film, Captain EO, which was produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The cast includes Anjelica Huston and the late comic Dick Shawn, who died on-stage during his act less than a year after the film was released.

Captain EO debuted at Disneyland on Sept. 18, 1986 (six days after its world premiere at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida), and ran continuously through April of 1997.

To celebrate the premiere at Disneyland, the park remained open for 36 straight hours and attendees received a souvenir T-shirt.

External effects inside Magic Eye Theater included lasers shot over audience members' heads and smoke and stars in the ceiling and walls.

EO cost $30 million to make, which makes it both the most expensive 17-minute film ever made and most expensive music video ever. It showcased two Jackson songs, "We Are Here to Change the World" and "Another Part of Me." The movie has never been released on DVD.
