“There is only one person I want to thank, and that is Jay for putting a ring on it."
——Beyoncé, accepting for Best Video

BEYONCÉ SHINES, U2 ROCKS AT THE MTV EUROPE VIDEO AWARDS

U.S. Acts Hog the Spotlight, Including Katy Perry, Who Hosted the Show
MTV hosted quite a bash in Berlin Saturday night, and Beyoncé was the star of the show.

She triumphed over the estrogen-loaded field of Leona Lewis, Lady Gaga, Shakira and host Katie Perry to pick up Best Female honors at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

That was one of three gongs Beyoncé took home, snagging Best Song for “Halo” and Best Video for the “Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It),” dedicating the latter award to Jay-Z. “There is only one person I want to thank,” she said, “and that is Jay for putting a ring on it." Apparently she doesn’t address him as "Hova" or "Jigga." Her hubby brought the couple’s total number of gongs to four, winning Best Urban Act.

Other Yank winners included Eminem (Best Male), Green Day (Best Rock) and Linkin Park (Best World Stage Performance).

Beyoncé capped things off with a show-stopping performance of “Sweet Dreams” poured into what looked like red lingerie and garters, raising the temperature throughout Western Europe. It was one of four outfits she wore during the show; according to The Times Online, she also broke out a demure fishtail gown, a sparkly black dress and the very same “dustbin lid” dress that X Factor judge Cheryl Cole had worn last weekend on the U.K. talent show, getting mocked relentlessly for what was viewed as a major fashion faux pas. But this diva is judged by a different standard than midlevel celebs.

But Katy Perry made no less than 12 costume changes while hosting the show, including a revealing red outfit complete with the logo of the West Ham football club, which her new boyfriend Russell Brand (!) immediately explained, via Twitter, was a nod to his beloved team.

U2 won the award for Best Live Act and then proceeded to prove they deserved, playing a free concert as part of the awards at the Brandenburg Gate in conjunction with the show to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Said Bono: "Danke schon, Berlin. Live is where this band lives. It's all that counts... If you have given us this award, I guess that's what you're thinking, and it means a great deal to us."

The show reached its grand finale as U2 blazed away at the Brandenburg Gate. Midway through “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” Bono asked the fans to greet the “Mayor of New York,” whereupon Jay-Z strode onstage to freestyle a verse before joining hands with Bono and leading the crowd of 10,000 in a chant of Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up” in honor of the wall coming down.
