HANDS ON ACTIVITY AT EMI

Guy Splits Board Into Two, Announces Promotions, Restructuring

EMI ruler Guy Hands’ latest missive to the troops, announcing the appointment of Nick Gatfield as President A&R North America and U.K., includes replacing the EMI Music Management Board with two new boards, the Chairman’s Board and the Operating Board. He also handed out promotions for Board members Chris Roling, Chris Kennedy, Mike Clasper, Mark Hodgkinson and Sam van der Feltz.

The Chairman’s Board, led by Hands, will focus on developing long-term strategy and dealing with major strategic topics such as acquisitions, meeting on a monthly basis.

The Operating Board will drive the operational management of the business and will deal with all day-to-day business decisions, meeting every two weeks. Chris Roling, named President and Chief Operating Officer of EMI Music, will chair.

Roling has been working as CFO of EMI Music and COO of International Labels since January. In his new role of President and COO, Chris Roling will be focusing full-time on managing the business on a global basis and on leading the Operating Board.

Kennedy has been promoted to the global role of Chief Financial Officer of EMI Music. Chris has worked for EMI since 1993 and will now transition his current financial, investor relations and restructuring responsibilities to Pat O’Driscoll, with whom he’ll spearhead the company’s reorganization.

Clasper’s executive responsibilities in operations are being passed to Douglas Merrill and Gareth Thomas, Head of Global Procurement and Logistics. Clasper will now serve as Deputy Chairman of the Operating Board, assisting Roling in his new role.

With Roger Ames having completed his work on the reorganization of EMI Music in North America and the UK, he will now leave the operational side of the EMI business and work with Hands and Terra Firma on strategic acquisitions.

Said Hands: “Roger’s advice to EMI over the past months has been invaluable and I would like to thank him for his contribution.” Until Gatfield joins the company, Ashley Unwin will become head of North American and UK A&R, with all label heads in those countries reporting to him in the interim.

With the appointment of Douglas Merrill, Hodgkinson, who has been largely responsible for the digital area, along with marketing, will move to become President of Business Development and will report directly to Hands, assigning Merrill in the transition.

Van der Feltz will assume responsibility for Global Marketing, bringing over 20 years’ marketing experience at a senior level from multinational consumer goods company Unilever where he was a member of the Board. He has successfully lent his marketing skills to several companies in the Terra Firma portfolio including, most recently, Odeon Cinemas.
