HE’S JUSTIN TIME FOR #1

Jive/ZLG Superstar Finishes First with 711k, Columbia’s Mayer, Capitol’s Seger Debut Top 5, Island’s Lionel Richie, Universal Motown’s The Mars Volta Top 10
Between Timberlake and Timbaland, there are plenty of trees in this week’s chart forest.

Jive/ZLG superstar Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds album storms the Top 50 this week, with a #1 debut and 711k, just 3k less than the year’s biggest debut, Lyric Street’s Rascal Flatts, who entered the chart back in April with 714k in sales.

Justin isn’t the only big story this week. Thanks to record-breaking business at iTunes, Columbia’s John Mayer keeps his label hot streak going—two straight #1 album debuts—with an impressive #2 bow for his new release, Continuum, which racked up 288k in sales.

Capitol Rock Hall of Famer Bob Seger returns with his first new studio album in 11 years, Face the Promise, which exceeds all expectations after a #4 bow and 146k in sales. The result reflects a longstanding relationship between Seger and manager Punch Andrews with label chief Andy Slater.

Island/IDJ’s Lionel Richie debuts at #6 with 76k in sales for his new album, Coming Home. Universal Motown prog-rockers The Mars Volta’s Amputechture is the other Top 10 newcomer at #9, with a total of 56k.

Holdovers in the Top 10 are Columbia’s Beyonce (#3) and Bob Dylan (#5), along with Universal Republic’s Hinder (#7, +20%), Bad Boy/Atlantic’s Danity Kane (#8) and Roadrunner/IDJ’s persistent Nickelback (#10).

Other chart newcomers include Geffen’s disappointing Papa Roach (#17), indie Desperation Records’ Barenaked Ladies (#20), Roadrunner/IDJ’s Black Label Society (#22), Reprise mensa metal band Mastodon (#32), Tooth & Nail Christian rockers Norma Jean (#33), So So Def/Virgin rap vet Daz Dillinger (#46) and Mercury Nashville’s Randy Rogers Band (#50).

In addition to Hinder, Epic’s How to Save a Life (#18, +13%) and A&M/Interscope Snow Patrol (up 16%, thanks to the Grey’s Anatomy TV promo) are this week’s double-digit sales gainers.
