RECORD SALES SPIKE,
JONES LEADS THE WAY

Grammys, Valentine’s Day Boost Sales for Nominees album, Dixie Chicks, Corinne Bailey Rae, Timberlake, Mayer, Chili Peppers
Don’t you wish the Grammys and Valentine’s Day could come every week?

Thanks to that potent 1-2 punch, the industry’s doldrums are temporarily lifted, with Blue Note’s Norah Jones, who didn’t appear on the awards show, but was featured on 60 Minutes and a slew of TV shows directly before, climbs back to #1, with 202k in sales. Another chart newcomer, Atlantic’s Gerald Levert, bowed at #2, with his posthumous In My Songs racking up an impressive 170k total.

The real story, though, was that little old awards show, which helped re-launch a number of titles, starting with SBMG/Commercial Music Group’s Grammy Nominees 2007 album, up a whopping 121% to #3. Capitol’s Corinne Bailey Rae enjoys an even more impressive 172% rise to #6, moving 114k copies, while the night’s big winner, Open Wide/Columbia’s Dixie Chicks, Taking the Long Way back onto the charts at #7, with a boost from some 12k to 107k.

Jive/ZLG’s Justin Timberlake used his Grammy performance and a record-shattering video sale on iTunes for his “What Goes Around…Comes Around” clip to jump 143% to #8, while Aware/Columbia NARAS darling John Mayer’s Continuum moves #33-10, with a 225% rise.

Top 10 holdovers include last week’s #1, IDJ’s Fall Out Boy (#4), Star Trak/ Interscope’s Robin Thicke (#5, +91%) and RCA/RMG’s Daughtry (#9, +30%).

Other beneficiaries of the gala night include WB’s Red Hot Chili Peppers (#39-12), Arista/RMG's Carrie Underwood (#13, +61%), Geffen’s Mary J. Blige (#16), G.O.O.D./Columbia’s John Legend (#22), RCA/RMG’s Christina Aguilera (#31), Downtown/Atlantic’s Gnarls Barkley (#34), RPM/Columbia’s Tony Bennett (#39) and Def Jam South/IDJ’s Ludacris (#41).

Mercury Nashville’s Lucinda Williams tops the rest of the chart debuts at #15, along with Atlantic’s Daddy’s Little Girls soundtrack (#42) and Manhattan’s Van Morrison movie music compilation (#46).

Razor & Tie’s Kidz Bop 11 and Sanctuary Music Group’s The Ataris are the week’s two top releases expected to chart next week.
