There’s Nothing Better Than Vegas in August, According to Rodel
By Rodel Delfin

Yeah, we love quoting obscure movie references. And you’ll probably catch us at the roulette table this week during the Amplify Music Conference in Sin City. A select group of music industry folks—label A&R execs, music publishers, artist managers, online marketing reps, booking agents, music supervisors, club promoters, music attorneys, producers and one industry trade rag loser—will scout some talent, speak on some panels, drink booze while rolling some dice and dining together on some late-night $1.99 steak and eggs at Binion’s Horseshoe. That said, we’re partial to the SW Steakhouse at the Wynn. We’ll give the full report next week if we’re still conscious… Meanwhile, lots of chatter on the street regarding Vancouver rock outfit Jet Black Stare. We hear the band is getting some weasel attention from Capitol Music Group, Atlantic, Island, Universal and Jive, as A&R reps are crossing the border to visit the Canucks. The group is repped by Hinder’s manager, Chief, and the tracks were produced by Nickelback’s sound guy—seems like the Nickelback-Hinder camp has a burgeoning creative network of new talent going on. Will this crew plant its flag in the Active Rock realm, as the Crush Management-Fall Out Boy posse (including Panic! at the Disco, Gym Class Heroes and Academy Is) has done in the emo world?... Zomba Music Publishing Creative Director Pete Visvardis is on a roll. His developing acts Cameron Jaymes and rock outfit The Crew recently signed with Tooth & Nail and Universal Republic, respectively… The Les Borsai-repped Burning Brides are in play. Months after the band’s label V2 closed its doors, the Philly group is still a free agent, but with building action at Specialty radio and summer/fall tours with Helmet, Dillinger Escape Plan and Mastodon, expect the label buzz to intensify… MORE ON FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS: We were quite surprised by the calls and emails we received on our recent little blurb on those funny Kiwis—it turns out that Melanie is not the only fan. Meanwhile, we heard that the band’s publishing is still open and that there are publishers interested in signing Bret and Jemaine. It may be a little sticky since HBO is involved, but we expect the band’s manager Murray to be getting more phone calls about it. By the way, the French music opening in last week’s episode was genius!... BUZZIN’: Castledoor, Jaydn Marie and Ben Goldman… Hit me up: [email protected]
