WHEELS & DEALS: BRUINS DELIVER THE TROJAN BUM-OUT

Rodel Gloats Following the Big Upset Before Getting Down to Bidness
By Rodel Delfin

We know this isn’t a sports column, but considering where the major label record biz is headed, it might as well be. But seriously, folks, we can’t help ourselves when our alma mater not only wins against their cross-town rival, breaking a seven-year losing streak, but also knocks out the #2 ranked team from the national championship. Haaaaha! We know we’re being childish, but so what. Kudos to UCLA coach Karl Dorrell, who gets to keep his job for another year, and more importantly to first-year defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker, whose defensive line won the game. And NO THANKS to the person who sent me a congratulatory email with the final scores while I was watching a delayed TiVo recording of the game. The dope that I am, I happened to check my BlackBerry during half-time. D’oh… NEWS TO USE: A few management derbies have been going on as of late, the most recent and most high-profile of which was for platinum-selling rock act Yellowcard. The Capitol Records act, signed by A&R hitters Ron Laffitte and Louie Bandak, met with numerous talent handlers before deciding to go with veteran manager/music executive Missy Worth. The pop-punk outfit recently exited its arrangement with The Firm… On the heels of signing the currently hot producer/songwriter Brian Howes, we hear that Interscope A&R player Jeff Sosnow has renewed his deal with the label. Sosnow gets props for signing the All-American Rejects, whose current LP has sold north of 1.5 mil domestically, and Australian rock outfit Wolfmother… In response to numerous inquiries received in the last few days, Howes already has a publishing deal in place with Dan McCarroll at EMI Music Publishing. On top of his Hinder success, Howes co-wrote two cuts on Chris Daughtry’s new album. And kudos to McCarroll, who has a longstanding relationship with Howes, for signing him early on. McCarroll continues his hot streak… Meanwhile, BMG Songs prexy Scott Francis and A&R VP Monti Olson ink Daughtry to a publishing arrangement. The American Idol performer is managed by Stirling Mcilwaine at Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment. Studio whiz Howard Benson produced the entire album, while RCA exec Ashley Newton and veteran creative exec Pete Ganbarg A&R'd the project together... Boy, it seems like the American Idol franchise is to the RCA Music Group what the Warner Music Group is to Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capitol (those leverage buyout yahoos…err, we mean private equity firms). Idol and WMG are the golden geese that keep on giving… Finally, the ASCAP/Deli magazine holiday party/showcase will feature White Rabbits, the Big Sleep and Dirty on Purpose.
