IVANA SPENDS SEVERAL HOURS ON THE WRONG KIND OF RUNWAY

O’Hare Serves As Her Personal Purgatory Following a Trip to NYC With NO SHOPPING!!!
MY FIELD TRIP TO PLANET 9: Since Lenny is busy this week in his usual role of “Industry Heavyweight,” I’m flying solo. This flight should be as thrilling as the five extra hours I spent at O’Hare Airport on Sunday, on my way home from the East Coast. Being a slave to American Airlines miles has its distinct disadvantages, especially with upgrades being as rare as an early add from KTCL. Had I not spent four of those five hours on the runway (I swear the flight attendant was smirking when he told me I wouldn’t make my scheduled connection), I could’ve gone to visit my friend Brett Greenberg at Victory, who is on Cloud 9 over PoMo radio’s response to the new Hawthorne Heights single, “Saying Sorry,” including stations as diverse as Live105 and WJRR this week, bringing the number of stations playing this song before next week’s add-date to 42! Every promo person’s biggest dream is to go into an add week with the record already charted. Well, that and getting fired with three years left on your contract… I’m not sure if I’ve congratulated John DeSantis for being given the official nod as PD at KCXX. He was among the many who added the new 30 Seconds to Mars single “The Kill” this week, well in advance of Virgin’s impact date. Bill Carroll and Howard P. have done a masterful job at radio with 30 Seconds to Mars, and I think they’d be the first to agree that the band’s willingness to participate in the “process” has been an undeniable asset. I also appreciate Bill’s willingness to indulge my KT Tunstall obsession by sending me a copy of her Today Show performance from last Friday [1/20]. If I were programming an upper-demo-leaning PoMo station, “Black Horse & the Cherry Tree” would be an automatic… If I were programming any PoMo station, I’d be playing Coheed & Cambria’s “Welcome Home,” which is certain to be an instant favorite with that crucial segment of the PoMo demo who still answer their home phones... Congrats to our dear friend Corbin Pierce who is exiting his PD post at KMYZ Tulsa (home of Hanson) to join the evil empire as PD at KHBZ Oklahoma City. Now we have a reason to go to OK City. Shaggy has given notice at WAQZ Cincinnati, leaving a PD position open in the land of Skyline Chili and Graeter’s Ice Cream. As of now, the PD gig in Boise is still unfilled, but that is likely to change very soon… The CBS radio meetings are currently being held in San Diego, which will allow some of the out-of-towners to audition 91X and KBZT during their breaks. I have this fantasy of everybody listening while Halloran does three hours on the genius of Figures on a Beach, inspiring CBS stations everywhere to have their PM jocks play songs from their personal iPods!... The person who once proclaimed, “The Beatles weren’t important” during a dinner the night before the WBCN River Rave was the same programmer who first identified the potential of Evanescence—our friend Seth Resler. The reason he was so unbelievably right about the latter was because he didn’t rely on his own taste or instincts (oh please); rather, his belief in the band was predicated on the massive immediate feedback he received from the listeners. Those seemingly out-of-nowhere smashes are what keep us on our toes! Well, that and the constant threat of being rendered obsolete. Octone has one of those rare, magically reactive records with Flyleaf’s “I’m So Sick,” which Mat at KRZQ said was the song that got the lion’s share of calls during their recent New Music Week. Both Active and PoMo are embracing this record, with the hardest-of-the-hard stations undeterred by playing a female-fronted rock band. This might be a good time to point out that Morningwood’s “Nth Degree” was also a huge phone record, so perhaps the format might want to finally retire the arcane notion that female voices don’t belong on the radio… During our whirlwind trip to NYC, there was no time to shop (how can I prove I was there?), but Sherri and I were fortunate enough to see the new Matisyahu video for “Youth,” the first single from his next CD. It’s going to be one of the biggest songs of 2006, and it’s exciting and encouraging to see something so compelling and original!… Our favorite song title of 2006 is “If You Talk Too Much (My Head Will Explode)” by our new faves People in Planes, which Alan Galbraith and the Wind-up gang launched to #1 Most Added this week! How we love to greet the new year with a one-listen smash!… Don’t you love “Sometimes the Sun” by The Lashes? This band looks exactly how you want the bands you play to look. Have Lisa Cristiano send you the video and you’ll know what I mean…. If I had $10 for every time I heard the word “upstream” last week, I’d be wearing Alexander McQueen Couture to the Grammys… Violet is joining the gang at KVGS Las Vegas! You loved her at KWOD and WZNE… We hail KRBZ Kansas City for being #2 18-34 men in the Fall book! Lazlo rules… SONG TO HEAR: Arctic Monkeys’ “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor”… PEOPLE TO WATCH: Mat Diablo, Dennis Blair, Tim Virgin, Jacqueline Saturn, Dan Connelly, Jeff Deane and John DiMaio.
