Buffett’s apparent breakout marks another big success for RLG’s Joe Galante and Butch Waugh, who are likely to see their third #1 debut in a 12-month period, having already scored top bows for Kenny Chesney in February and Alan Jackson last August.

ONE-DAY SALES: LAID-BACK BUFFETT COMES ON STRONG

New Album Through RCA Label Group Seen Challenging for #1
Jimmy Buffett may sing about wasting away, but after one day on sale, his latest album is doing anything but.

According to early reports from national accounts, Buffett's License to Chill (Mailboat/RCA Nashville/RLG) should see sales of at least 150k for the week. That means it’s time to break out the margaritas, because Chill has a real shot at #1 against Usher.

Indeed, our team of retail statisticians believes that Buffet’s 150k is likely to increase, given that his fan base—known as “Parrotheads” to the sandals ’n’ Hawaiian-shirt set—is famously active and ready to pounce on any new material handed down from their mellow messiah.

Usher, meanwhile, seems to have found a new level at around 140k. And while it looks from this vantage point like Buffett will beat that easily, it’s worth remembering that Usher has had plenty of experience locking up the top chart slot this time out, and with a smash the size of Confessions (LaFace/ZLG), he shouldn’t be counted out. Current projections indicate that this week’s #1, G Unit/Interscope’s Lloyd Banks, should settle to around 100k or more in his third week, putting him in contention for #3 on next week’s chart.

Other titles gearing up for big debuts on next week’s chart include The RootsTipping Point (Geffen), which looks headed for first-week sales of around 100k, and Hollywood’s Cinderella Story soundtrack, which is packing four new Hilary Duff tracks. Factoring in the movie opening this weekend, Cinderella should be headed for a first-week total just shy of 100k, though depending on response to the movie, anything can happen (i.e. don’t bother blaming us if we end up completely off the mark on this one). Thank you.
