OMARION IS TOPS, AS GRAMMY SPIKES GET LESS SPIKEY

B2K Solo Project Ascends, Kidz Bop, Tori Amos Debut Top 10 as Gravity Brings Many Back
to Earth
Epic’s Omarion, the first member of B2K to go solo, has seen his debut effort, O, rise to the top. In the week following this year’s post-Grammy sales surge, Omarion claimed the #1 album chart berth on sales just over 180k.

That feat was made possible in part by the settling of last week’s chart monsters Ray Charles and Green Day, whose major Grammy heat cooled by 50% and 48%, respectively, this week to land Genius Loves Company (Concord) at #2 and American Idiot (Reprise) at #3.

The Game’s The Documentary (Aftermath/G-Unit/Interscope) eased by 19% to move him into #4, while the Top 5 was rounded out by Grammy performer John Legend, whose Get Lifted (GOOD/Columbia/Sony Urban) takes #5 on 78.5k sold for the week, a 17% decline.

Other Grammy beneficiaries saw significant settling as well, including LaFace/ZLG’s Usher (#11, -43%, 61.2k), Interscope’s Gwen Stefani (#15, -21%, 50.4k), Octone/J/RMG’s Maroon 5 (#17, -34%, 47.8k), J’s Alicia Keys (#24, -52%, 35.3k) and Interscope’s U2 (#45, -54%, 26.2k).

All this is to be expected, of course. In fact, with the exception of four chart debuts and one re-entry, every one of the Top 50 registered a sales decline this week as the Grammy hoopla eased. Indeed, the greatest downward trend for the week belonged to Captiol’s Grammy Nominees compilation (#14, -55%, 51.3k).

Some retail genius would have said, “The market’s smaller this week than it was last week” if we had bothered to ask, but we didn’t bother to ask.

As for those debuts, aside from the aforementioned Omarion at #1, two other albums made it into the Top 10 in their first week of release: Razor & Tie’s always-bopping Kidz Bob 7, which landed at #6 on sales of 72.8k, and Epic’s Tori Amos, whose The Beekeeper made its debut at #7 based on 67.4k sold.

The fourth debut for the week is reggaeton buzz artist Daddy Yankee, whose Universal Latino debut nabbed #49 on 24.2k sold. And the sole re-debut for the week belongs to Columbia’s Crossfade, who, thanks to multiple cuts at radio gaining critical mass, saw their sales jump to 28.7k from around 21k last week, bouncing them onto the chart at #41.

Next week, look for debuts from Jennifer Lopez (Epic), Jack Johnson (Enjoy/Universal) and Mars Volta (Universal), each of which streeted as scheduled (3/1). But look out for 50 Cent (G-Unit/Aftermath/Interscope), whose release moved up to Thursday (3/3) and will come in a strong #1.
