“MUSIC BUSINESS NOW”
SUMMER EDITION ANOUNCED

Professors Beer, Jampol and Sturges
to Teach in the Heat
The second in a series of already well-received UCLA Extension classes devoted to the study of the rapidly changing music industry, “The Music Business Now,” will be held this summer on the UCLA campus.

The second class, titled “Breaking a Career Artist,” will be held on nine Wednesday evenings from 7-10 p.m. beginning July 6. The instructors, as with the successful winter-quarter session, will be HITS Editor in Chief Lenny Beer, Doors manager Jeff Jampol and Universal Music Exec. VP Creative Affairs Tom Sturges.

For those interested in learning more (as we all should be) about the current state of artist development, here’s the official UCLA catalog entry and guest speaker list for the new class, which, incidentally, will set you back $495 but earn you three units and fulfill the marketing requirement for the certificate program in The Music Business:

"An artists success depends largely on the marketing, sales, and promotion efforts—using both traditional and digital tools—that are undertaken locally, nationally and internationally. This course details these efforts and defines the roles played by the label, artists, managers, publicists, agents, and others involved in marketing the release.

"This advanced class provides hands-on experience, lectures, and discussion with guest speakers covering: creative elements—designs, visuals, imaging, packaging, and video; sales and distribution—retail, solicitations, deals/discounts, advertising, Soundscan, single vs. album sales, and new formats; promotion—radio, video, internet, set-up (clubs, street promotions, mix shows), MIS/Mediabase, trades, and charts; publicity—bios, EPKs, press releases, photos, promo tours, and TV appearances; and the marketing campaign—marketing plan, Web promotions, distribution, and putting it all together."
