"I would say it’s the strongest West Coast-based rap album to come out since Dr. Dre’s The Chronic."
——Violet Brown, Trans World/Wherehouse on The Game

GAME WINNER!

Green Day, Eminem, Lil' Jon and John Legend Make Up Top Five

The Game has game.

The G-Unit/Aftermath/Interscope rapper has only been shot at five times, compared to his boss 50 Cent’s nine bullet holes, but that was evidently enough to make his debut album Documentary this week’s #1 album.

Trans World/Wherehouse’s Violet Brown, who h as ducked her share of gunfire, took time out from constructing her shrine to Johnny Carson to exult: "I would say it’s the strongest West Coast-based rap album to come out since Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. What else from the West Coast has sold that kind of units? He has huge appeal across the country. We’re feeling it throughout the entire chain. It’s scary good. This is going to be around for a while. It has a ton of singles and radio is already playing a lot of them. This is a record you can listen to in its entirety."

The total of 611k is almost seven times more than Reprise’s Green Day, the second place finisher, followed by Shady/Interscope’s Eminem (#3), TVT’s Lil’ Jon and the Eastside Boyz (#4) and GOOD/Columbia/Sony Urban’s John Legend (#5).

The rest of the Top 10 includes RCA/RMG’s Kelly Clarkson (#6), LaFace/ZLG multi-Grammy nominee Usher (#7), Def Jam South/IDJ’s Ludacris (#8), Capitol’s Now 17 (#9) and Columbia/CRG’s Destiny’s Child (#10).

Double-digit increases are registered by J Records/RMG’s American Idol winner Fantasia (#29-16, +24%), Island/IDJ’s The Killers (#21-14, +16%), Sony Classical’s Phantom of the Opera soundtrack (#19-13, +14%), Hollywood’s Jesse McCartney (#32-31, +13%), thanks to Top 40 airplay, and Epic’s Garden State soundtrack (#30-24, +10%), riding the DVD release.

Next week, look for BNA country superstar Kenny Chesney’s Be As You Are, his Caribbean-flavored ode to island living, to challenge for the top spot, despite the fact the album is a change of pace from his usual style, a personal record that doesn’t have the normal gargantuan airplay-driven single. His previous album, When the Sun Goes Down, returns to the Top 50 this week at #44.
