IN THIS THOROUGHLY MODERN GIG, WORK AND PLAY INTERACT

Joint Undertaking From EA, Grammy Foundation Will Expose High School Students to the Ins and Outs of Interactive Entertainment
Electronic Arts and the Grammy Foundation today announced the creation of a new collaborative effort in the Grammy Pro Session series dedicated to music for videogames. Grammy Pro Session: Video Game Music and Sound Design will give students an insider’s view into careers in the music industry.

On Oct. 17, 60 high school students will converge on EA’s Los Angeles studio to kick off the series. Designed to educate and inspire, this Pro Session will introduce music students to the various aspects of interactive entertainment, taking them behind the scenes to learn about the creative process and gain practical experience in music composition and non-linear sound design for videogames.

Using EA’s WWII-inspired Medal of Honor European Assault and the whimsical The Sims 2 as the basis of the curriculum, the Pro Session will give students with all the knowledge and tools to complete their ultimate assignment, as they compose two minutes of nonlinear music and interactive sound, which will be played in an EA game environment. During the course of the sessions, they’ll get plenty of hands-on experience by interacting with EA’s music authors and engineers. They’ll also get advice and constructive feedback on their projects from ELLA VP/GM Neil Young, Worldwide Executive of Music and Music Marketing Steve Schnur, lead sound designer Erik Kraber and a special guest, composer Michael Giacchino (Lost, Alias, The Incredibles), who scored the music for Medal of Honor.

The first Grammy Pro Session: Video Game Music and Sound Design is open to local L.A.-area schools and Grammy Signature Schools. Students interested in participating online can find more info at (www.grammyintheschools.com ) by selecting the Pro Sessions link.

Said Recording Academy and Grammy Foundation President Neil Portnow in making the announcement: "We are delighted to team up with EA as a leader in interactive entertainment to provide students with the tools and instruction to create video game music and sound design. With a variety of career choices in the music business, we are committed to exposing students to every available opportunity in order to help them achieve their professional dreams."

Commented Schnur, who was recently named Vice Chairman of the Grammy Foundation: “This is a great moment in the evolution of music and entertainment education. We are honored to be partnering with the Grammy Foundation and to be the first interactive entertainment company that opens its doors to music students nationwide. We hope that the Pro Session will help inspire some of today’s young adults to consider a musical career in interactive entertainment.”

Added Steve Seabolt, EA’s executive in charge of education: “This effort further extends EA’s Education Initiative—whether it’s art, math, computer science, storytelling or music, we want to inspire kids to excel at school so they achieve their dream of growing up and creating great games. We couldn’t imagine a better partner than the Grammy Foundation. Their stellar reputation for providing students with music industry opportunities and interactive learning experiences is recognized the world over.”

During the 2005-06 school year, Pro Sessions will also be held in Orlando, Vancouver, San Francisco and Chicago.
