Your Intrepid A&R Weasel Runs This Week's Column Up the Anti-Flagpole to See Who Salutes
By Rodel Delfin

POST-TURKEY FLAG WAVING: Hope you enjoyed the turkey holiday weekend. And while y’all were stuffing and gorging your faces with that good ‘ol turkey stuffing, the management derby for RCA-signed punk outfit Anti-Flag finally ended. We hear that industry veteran Missy Worth has been selected by the band to handle their career direction. As you may recall, Anti-Flag was previously on indie Fat Wreck Chords and was heavily pursued by a number of majors before they signed with Matt Marshall at RCA. Word on the street was that there were several management players vying to pick up the band. In case you don’t know, also on the Worth management roster is Geffen punk band Rise Against, whose current album, Siren Song of the Counter-Culture, has already sold over 300k. Both acts do very well on the road from tour and merch revenues and make for a nice little punk-rock management roster. Anti-Flag’s major label album is scheduled for release on March 21, 2006, and they’ll play Warped ’06 as well... Meanwhile, we heard there was a big weasel turnout at the Arctic Monkeys shows in N.Y. and L.A. during the week before the holiday. The Tinseltown show at Spaceland was reportedly jam-packed. Reps from Capitol, Columbia, Warner Bros., Atlantic, Epic, Hollywood, RCA, Island, Geffen and Interscope were out representing. Stay tuned... Lots of buzz building around the Mark Kates-managed act The Cribs. Expect more weaseling at their L.A. show at Spaceland this week... At presstime, the David Surnow/Chris Fudurich-managed The Outline flew to New York for some major label meet-and-greets. The band’s last Troubadour show was heavily attended by A&R folks. And we hear a couple labels are stepping up with checkbooks in hand. Expect more weasels at the band’s upcoming Troub show (see buzz/gigs), if they’re still available, where they’ll open for Panic at the Disco... The George Couri-managed What Made Milwaukee Famous has some label heat building. Will the band be off the market soon?... On the pub, pub, pub tip, the Paul Pontius-signed Under the Influence of Giants have signed a deal with Todd Parker at Windswept Pacific. Looks like the band and manager/former A&R hitter Berko decided to roll with a new publishing player outside of the other pubcos in the mix. The group is in the studio recording their Island debut with currently hot producers (and former Blind Melon members) Brad Smith and Christopher Thorn... Lastly, lots of grumbling going on over some possible year-end changes at one East Coast major. Will we see a change at the presidential level? And how will that affect said label’s A&R staff? Inquiring minds want to know... BUZZIN’: Adrian Amadeo, Billionaire Boys Club and The Kites... Hit me up: [email protected]
