THE IVANA AND LENNY SHOW:
WHAT'S LEFT OF THE DIAL

In Which Our Two Protagonists Bemoan the State of Alt Radio and Compare iPod Playlists
Ivana: I'm still fielding calls about our April Fool's joke
Lenny: sorry, u r bothering me, i am busy listening to oldies
Ivana: jack? howard? dave? ted? are these new radio formats or names of my ex’s?
Lenny: what i've always wanted is to hear: “safety dance” and then “cum on feel the noize”
Ivana: personally, I liked donnie iris' "ah leah" into depeche mode's "blasphemous rumors"
Lenny: an issue to ponder: what's the real difference between the jack off format and the jerk it out ipod commercial?
Ivana: both make people want to listen to their ipods?
Lenny: doesn't anyone realize that people like to discover new things.... and that people like hits? can someone please say "duh"
Ivana: duh
Lenny: i actually like a lot of the new music, at a time when radio has decided it likes old music
Ivana: knrk is doing the "neo jack" thing--a variety of gold and cool new music and they're #1 18-34! I hope it works for q101
Lenny: so they are new old? or old new? it is thoroughly modern radio. wanna hear which songs I like?
Ivana: or, as beasing says, if fewer currents mean the station doesn't flip to spanish, it's a sacrifice worth making. since neither of us are in the demo, let’s hear which songs you like
Lenny: i love the killers, all 104 of their songs.... i love the bravery, the kaiser chiefs, the gorillaz, audioslave, beck, hot hot heat and Interpol. and i also think bloc party is interesting and aqualung is awesome
Ivana: isn't it? I stalked matt from aqualung during sxsw. that song is a classic—it could’ve been written by jimmy webb—it’s THAT good.
Ivana: so, if you're working one of these truly MODERN-leaning songs, like interpol, the bravery, hot hot heat, etc. and pomo radio is happier playing faceless rock, what do you do?
Lenny: u work radio AND the other outlets. radio is not the be all and end all… it’s part of the mix
Ivana: it's frustrating--you want them to lead because that's what the pomo format was founded on—the first to embrace new bands. then I heard today that a station that does break bands, wfnx, might lose bds monitoring status. there are two stations in johnson city, wherever the fuck that is, but wfnx is in jeopardy. it’s theater of the absurd.
Lenny: bravery is in the 20s in airplay, yet selling over 30k this week
Ivana: let's hear it for mtv2
Lenny: it is not all from airplay.... mtv2 has been huge supporter, as has mtvU and aol radio
Ivana: radio still has such a huge impact--that's why we continue to grind away
Lenny: and touring, and retail exposure—everything matters… kaiser chiefs is meeting major resistance at radio, yet i still think they can be a meaningful success
Ivana: i don't think it's resistance. it’s just hard to make new songs work in this climate
Lenny: one must work bands they believe in on all levels and hope radio support is one of the levels. one must explore all avenues in the current climate... UNTIL RADIO WAKES THE FUCK UP AGAIN
Ivana: there's no way for stations to get ratings if 1/3 of their audience doesn't have a home phone
Lenny: or if they play stupid shit all the time
Ivana: what do you consider "stupid shit"
Lenny: dumb oldies, stiffs that they like, callout driven non-selling non-requesting music
Ivana: and what is the criteria?
Lenny: right now there appear to be more hits than at most times. which makes the loss of stations and reduction of currents even sadder. my criteria is and has always been to play what sells and what gets phone reaction... the actives always lead the passives
Ivana: hey, wxrk added Interpol last week and now it’s relegated to online play
Lenny: does anyone really think that people in philly and new york do not like music like the killers, bravery, interpol, mars volta, my chemical romance, et al????
Ivana: they do, i guess everybody thinks that they just don't listen to the radio
Lenny: then it is our job to find what they do pay attention to and market there
Ivana: attending your ucla class was interesting--The O.C. and video games weighed in as huge music-drivers
Lenny: so, what records do you like these days, that we have not yet discussed
Ivana: arcade fire, of course. glad mtv2 is going for that in a big way.
Lenny: they are over 100k sold without a hit on the radio
Ivana: but their biggest sales markets are where they do have airplay
Lenny: anyone else
Ivana: athlete on astralwerks. i also love the gorillaz. and I love the new spoon cd
Lenny: they have always been in my top three utensils
Ivana: tegan & sara is a smash, love love love the kaiser chiefs, excited to hear the oasis, think the caesars rule completely, and am thrilled that geordie is breaking another artist with z-trip
Lenny: how do u find out about new music
Ivana: $$?
Lenny: ah, me too. i think this column should be over now
Ivana: we haven't discussed my pms or lorraine’s wakefield record
Lenny: well, wakefield is awesome and your pms is constant. so who do you like in the game tonite?
Ivana: The Bachelor?
Lenny: oy. i think it’s time to say goodnight, gracie
Ivana: goodnight gracie
