“R. Kelly’s ideas for ‘Trapped in the Closet’ really worked for him. I’m really happy there are a lot more tracks beyond ‘Trapped’ to bring people back into the stores."

THE DAWG DAYS OF SUMMER

Urban Rules, as R. Kelly And Missy Elliott Take Control of the Top of the Chart…
Wassup, dawgs and dog-ettes? It’s an urban week at the top of the HITS chart this week, as two powerhouses of the form debut and secure the top two positions, with yet another urban debut entering the chart at #9.

Controversy can’t hold the man down (or the man can’t bust our music...or something like that)—and Jive/ZLG’s R. Kelly comes in at #1, with 502k units sold (and it probably would’ve done even better if that damn hurricane down South hadn’t hit over the weekend). The #2 position belongs to da ladies, as Missy Elliott (Violator/Atlantic) hits the chart fightin’ (and cookin’) with 175k. This week’s other notable debut is also on the urban tip...with Houston rapper Webbie (Trill/Asylum) scoring the #9 spot at 62k.

“R. Kelly’s ideas for ‘Trapped in the Closet’ really worked for him,” says Trans World/Wherehouse diva Violet Brown. “It was a very strong #1 for us, and I’m really happy there are a lot more tracks beyond ‘Trapped’ to bring people back into the stores. It should have several more singles. And it’s also good to see Missy hitting high numbers again. It was really strong for us.”

There’s no stopping Capitol’s Coldplay, though, as Mr. Paltrow and his boys maintain the #3 position at 127k, while Mariah Carey (Island/IDJ) also stays put in the #4 position at 115k. MCA Nashville’s George Strait and TVT’s Ying Yang Twins drop from last week’s #1 and 2 positions, with the rap siblings scoring #5 at 94k and the Texan troubadour hitting #6 at 90k.

A&M/Interscope’s Black Eyed Peas hold steady as well, dropping one spot from #6 to #7, with 74k sold. Rounding out the Top 10 are Roswell/RMG’s Foo Fighters at #8 with 67k, and Interscope’s Gwen Stefani in the #10 spot off of 62k. Finally, there’s no underestimating the continuing power of American Idol, as RCA/RMG’s Kelly Clarkson drops to #11 but still manages to sell a solid 57k. All of which goes to show that despite the state of the biz, we’re still seeing genuine hits with staying power for the long haul during these hot summer months.

Next week is hip-hop’s turn at the plate, with Slim Thug and Bow Bow. Woof.
