ONE-DAY SALES: RETAIL JONESING FOR SOME ACTION

Rapper Jim Jones Will Have the Biggest Bow, but He Won’t Reach Six Figures
We’re now in the throes of one of the summer’s deadest weeks, so this is gonna be a short one, kiddies.

Without a doubt, the week’s highest-charting debut will be from Koch’s Jim Jones, a member of the Diplomats posse, who’s rhyming his way toward 65k-70k. For the inevitable Kool-Aid joke, see yesterday’s chart story.

With no six-figure bow in the picture, the fight for next week’s #1 will likely pit two extremely familiar names: Island/IDJ diva Mariah Carey, whose comeback album The Education of Mimi is one of the year’s handful of bona fide bright spots, and Capitol’s Now 19, which conveniently packages the biggest hits from recent months.

Carey has consistently run up weekly totals north of 100k (she did 109k this week, good for #3), and Now (which landed in the #4 spot on 107k) still has some life left in it. So those two will likely best this week’s #1, Hollywood’s Hilary Duff (200k this week), and #2, Arista Nashville’s Brad Paisley (197k), assuming the typical 50%-60% decline from week one to week two. Then again, what the hell do we know?

Another new release to keep an eye on is The Bled, the latest hot property from happenin’ rock indie Vagrant, which is headed toward a solid first week in the vicinity of 25k-30k, as the label keeps coming up with viable young acts.

And now for the really exciting stuff. The market was virtually flat this week (+0.7%, or 75k), but down 10.5%, or 1.2 million units, versus the same week of 2004. The weekly total of 10.2 million brings the year-to-date tally to 355 million, which is about the same as the total combined sales of Frampton Comes Alive and The Eagles’ Greatest Hits in 1976. But seriously, folks, the market is currently down 8.2% on the year.
