LUTHER VANDROSS, 50 CENT TAKE TWO AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS

Only Seven Rocking Weeks Until Rocking Dick Rocking Clark’s Rocking New Years Rocking Eve Rocking
Luther Vandross’ mother took home two American Music Awards last night, accepting for her son, who is still recovering from a stroke. Vandross won favorite male R&B performer and favorite soul/R&B album for his Dance with My Father.

Vandross’ mother Mary thanked the crowd at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, saying she was very sorry that her son couldn’t be there in person. When Vandross won his second trophy, Shield star and gentleman Michael Chiklis brought it out to her in the audience because she had some trouble climbing the Shrine’s stairs.

50 Cent also won two trophies, for favorite male rap artist and favorite rap-hip-hop album for Get Rich or Die Tryin’. Fitty wasn’t there, but Ja Rule accepted for him.

The show opened with Britney Spears performing “Me Against the Music” in a corset, hot pants and thigh-high boots. She was followed by Kid Rock, who put music to the thoughts of red-blooded males by covering Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love.” Rock later won the favorite male pop-rock award and stayed out all night celebrating. In fact, he’s probably still out as you read this.

Other performances included Pink’s acoustic version of “Trouble,” Rod Stewart, Fleetwood Mac taped from Germany, Alan Jackson, Hillary Duff, Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, Alabama, Sheryl Crow, Sean Paul, Metallica, and Coca-Cola New Music Award winners The Bomb Squad.

The show was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Nominations for the American Music Awards are based on sales figures and radio play. Winners were selected by a survey of about 20,000 listeners.
