BACK IN BLACK

School of Rock at Top of Box Office Class
He wowed you in Shallow Hal, you love him in Tenacious D, you even braved seeing him in women’s underwear in that Foo Fighters video, finally America agrees with you: Jack Black is a rocker and a movie star, as his School of Rock opened with $20.2 million, making it the #1 movie in America. Ronnie James Dio would approve.

School of Rock beat out Denzel Washington’s Out of Time, which landed in second with $17 million. Washington has never appeared in a Foo Fighters video.

Last week’s #1, The Rundown, dropped to third with $9.7 million. Bill Murray’s Lost in Translation continues to grow as its release is expanded to include more screens. It did $4.2 million and landed in seventh place.

Here’s the rest of the Top 10: #4 Under the Tuscan Sun ($7.9m); #5 Secondhand Lions ($5.3m); #6 Underworld ($4.8m); #8 The Fighting Temptations ($3.2m); #9 Once Upon a Time in Mexico ($2.5m); #10 Cold Creek Manor ($2.5m).
