NORAH’S MAKING HER-STORY

Feels Like Home Is Headed Toward a Million in First-Week Sales, Which Puts It in Rarified Company
Norah JonesFeels Like Home is hitting home with record buyers.

The album is headed towards a million in first-week sales, which would make it the highest-debuting album since 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Trying sold 806k last February 2003, and the most since NSYNC’s Celebrity did some 1.9 million in July 2001. Eminem’s The Eminem Show, which came out early for Memorial Day Weekend in 2002, sold 300k in four days on its way to a 10-day total of 1.7 million.

It is the largest-selling EMI-distribbed record since Garth BrooksDouble Live took advantage of a shift of a day in the retail reporting schedule to become the first album to top 1 million back in Nov. 1998. Until then, the highest first weeks were registered by Pearl Jam’s VS (950k in Oct. ‘93) and Vitalogy (890k in Dec. ’94) and Brooks’ Sevens (900k in Nov. ’97).

NSYNC’s No Strings Attached boasts the largest first-week sales ever, garnering 2.4 million back in March 2000. That started a spate of one-million-plus first-weeks with Britney SpearsOops I Did It Again notching 1.3 million upon release May 16, while Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP sold 1.8 million when it came out the following week.

Other first-week million sellers include Backstreet BoysMillennium (1.1 million in May ’99) and Black & Blue (1.6 million in Nov. 2000) and Limp Bizkit’s Chocolate Starfish… (1 million in Oct. 2000).

Thanks to Grammy heat, Valentine' Day and the remarkable Ms. Jones, sales are trending up 20% over last week, and are up over 10% from this same week in 2003.
