GROBAN GRABS #1

143/Reprise Crooner Climbs Past Keys, OutKast, No Doubt and Sheryl Crow to Secure Top Spot
It’s 2004… Do you know where your teen idol is?

143/Reprise crooner Josh Groban made Warner Bros.Tom Whalley and producer David Foster very happy men by leapfrogging to the #1 spot on this week’s album chart, edging out J’s Alicia Keys by less than 10k units. Groban’s total sales were up 29% over the previous week, for a total of more than 107k, the only title over 100k.

HMV's Jeff Davidson, just back from a quickie Vegas marriage to Britney Spears, gushed: "Josh Groban is nothing short of a phenomenon. In a week where most records were trending down, he seems to be getting a boost from the huge DR TV campaign that’s been ongoing. His demographic is so broad, it wouldn’t surprise me to see this title stay in the Top 10 for months to come."

Last week’s leader, Arista’s OutKast, dropped to #3, with a pair of Interscope greatest hits albums in No Doubt (#4) and A&M’s Sheryl Crow (#5) rounding out the Top Five.

The rest of the Top 10 includes DreamWorks Nashville’s Toby Keith (#6), Columbia/CRG’s Now Vol. 14 (#7), HITS cover guy J’s Ruben Studdard (#8), Wind-up’s Evanescence (#9) and WB’s Linkin Park (#10). Interscope, J and Warner Bros. have two records apiece in the Top 10.

Highest-charting newcomer was Atlantic’s British tongue-in-cheek metallers The Darkness, who debuted at #31, and Elektra/EEG’s Aussie garage-rockers Jet, who came in at #40.

Added Davidson, after donning his feather boa and spandex: "We also saw a big bump in sales on The Darkness. No, not that kind of bump..."

Columbia/CRG’s Beyonce was the only other sales gainer for the week, up 5% and moving 29-11 on the chart.

The first big release week of the new year isn’t expected until next month, when Epic’s Incubus, Columbia/CRG’s Harry Connick Jr. and Five for Fighting and BNA/RCA Label Group Nashville’s Kenny Chesney come out on Feb. 3. The year gets off to its real start with the Grammys on Feb. 8, followed by the release of Norah Jones’ latest, Feels Like Home, on Feb. 10, which some retail pundits predict could go over 600k in first-week sales.
