MILLION-DOLLAR BABY!

Apple Says iTunes Music Store Sold a Million Downloads in First Week
Apple Computer has announced that the iTunes Music Store—its brand-new online music outlet—sold more than 1 million downloads in its debut week.

What’s more, Steve Jobs’ company asserts that over half the 200,000 tracks being offered in the store were purchased at least once. Apple will announce the addition of 3,200 more tracks on May 6, including, among other titles, new music from Fleetwood Mac, Andrea Bocelli, Jack Johnson and Jesse Harris, catalog from Alanis Morissette, Michelle Branch’s The Spirit Room and additional albums from the Eagles.

The store, which is accessible only to Mac users running Apple’s latest OS for the time being, works via the firm’s iTunes 4 software and syncs up to its popular iPod portable devices. All five of the Big Five have licensed music, and reviews have thus far been largely positive. Apple plans to roll out a version for Windows users (who make up about 97% of the PC market) by year’s end.

What’s more, Apple claims orders have come in for 110,00-plus new iPods.

"In less than one week we’ve broken every record and become the largest online music company in the world," proclaimed Jobs. "Apple has created the first complete solution for the digital music age."

"Hitting 1 million songs in less than a week was totally unexpected," crowed WMG Chairman/CEO Roger Ames. "Apple has shown music fans, artists and the music industry as a whole that there really is a successful and easy way of legally distributing music over the Internet. Or so my assistant tells me."

"Our internal measure of success was having the iTunes Music Store sell 1 million songs in the first month," chortled UMG ruler Doug Morris. "To do this in one week is an over-the-top success. Apple definitely got it right with the iTunes Music Store. This sort of thing could turn out to be a real boon for Brownsville Station."
