WILL RECORD SALES BE
FLATTENED BY BLACKOUT?

How Badly Will Massive Blackout on East Coast, Midwest, Hurt Retail?
If you happen to be trapped in an elevator in Manhattan, or stuck inside an unair-conditioned apartment in Detroit or somewhere along the Eastern Seaboard affected by yesterday’s historic power failure, you probably don't give a hoot what it means to first-week sales for Alan Jackson’s new greatest hits album.

That’s what we’re here for.

With a complete blackout of information coming from East Coast retailers, speculators are left to speculate what the loss of electricity could mean to an already power-drained record industry.

Arista Nashville was looking at sales in the range of 300-325k for the Jackson record and the next-best chart entry, Vagrant/TVT/Interscope’s Dashboard Confessional, was pegged at 125-140k. How much will those numbers be off by the likely shutdown of record retailers in New York City, Cleveland, Detroit and much of the Atlantic Coast? Handleman, based in Detroit, had its accounting systems still down as of this morning, while all the Wal-Marts in the Northeast have also been affected, making any kind of judgment on sales impossible.

The lack of any solid information from the East Coast will make predicting this week’s sales numbers all the more difficult. Will they be off 10%? 20%? With electricity gradually being restored to the affected areas heading into the weekend, Monday will provide a better picture of the blackout’s overall affect on record sales.

Of course, for those sweaty New Yorkers who had to shlep home for three hours over the Brooklyn Bridge, that’s scant consolation. In fact, we’re betting they don’t give a shit. Aren’t you glad we do?
