WHOLE LOTTA LED ZEP

Massive DVD, CD Packages Totaling Nine Hours-Plus of Unreleased Material Coming Next Month
It may not be a reunion, but it's the next best thing. On May 27, a colossal amount of previously unreleased Led Zeppelin live material will officially see the light of day. That’s when Atlantic Records and Warner Strategic Marketing will jointly release what they describe, without a trace of hyperbole, as “the mother lode of Led Zeppelin live recordings.”

Led Zeppelin DVD (listing at $29.98) contains five and a half hours and 30 songs spread over two discs. How the West Was Won ($26.98) is a three-CD set containing 18 tracks, some of them rather loooooong. The DVD and CD sets contain no common material, meaning there’s no overlap between the two releases.

The DVD set contains filmed performances from various stages of the band’s history: a January 1970 show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, a July 1973 Madison Square Garden performance, a five-night run at London’s Earl Court in May 1975 and an August 1979 appearance at the Knebworth Festival. The material has been restored, remixed, and remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, DTS, and PCM two-channel stereo under the supervision of Jimmy Page and director Dick Carruthers.

The material on the CD set was taken from a pair of June 1972 performances in L.A., one at the Forum, the other at the Long Beach Arena. Among the 18 tracks are an epic 25-minute version of “Dazed and Confused” and a 23-minute medley based around “Whole Lotta Love.”

Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones (they must be getting along better these days) are expected to attend the May 27 world premiere of the DVD material (edited down to two hours for the event) at the Loews Theatre in Midtown Manhattan. They’ll also be conducting interviews.

Merch-wise, you're gonna need to score one of those blimps they're making up. It'll look way cool suspended from the ceiling of your office.
