CHICKS GET THEIR KICKS
The warm breeze wafting up from San Diego after the Super Bowl enabled Open Wide/Columbia/CRG’s Dixie Chicks, who sang the National Anthem, to wing back to the top chart perch with a 26% sales increase, even though "The Star-Spangled Banner" isn’t included on their current album.
Bowl exposure also boosted the Mercury album of halftime performer Shania Twain back Up! to #9 on a 39% jump. And Capitol’s Coldplay, who appeared on the post-game debut of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Show, picked up 17%, going 20-19.
Said Fred Meyer’s Brian Stevens, after denying he was drinking with Barret Robbins before the game: "The Super Bowl spiked sales on both Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain. And Coldplay also saw a big boost from the Kimmel show performance."
This week’s chart is also warmed by the glow of a newborn Zwan, as Billy Corgan’s post-Pumpkins bow on Reprise is the top chart debut at #2, with just under 100k in sales. "Zwan had a very strong first week, showing that Billy Corgan’s fan base is as staunch as ever," said the ever-redundant Meyers.
If you TiVo users have been skipping the commercials, you’ve been missing the latest career move by Kid Rock, whose Coors Light spots—along with a Sheryl Crow duet—have re-ignited his 2001 Lava/Atlantic/Atl G disc, which goes 8-6 on a 32% jump.
Added Stevens: "Kid Rock saw another big week, too, not only from his huge new single with Sheryl Crow but also his Super Bowl ads." Is there an echo around here?
The Top 10 is rounded out by Blue Note’s Norah Jones (#3), the still-strong Epic/Sony Music Soundtrax Chicago album (#4), Arista’s dominant Avril Lavigne (#5), Epic’s Jennifer Lopez (#7), Goldmind/Elektra’s Missy Elliott (#8) and Shady/Interscope/UMG Strx’s 8 Mile (#10).
Also posting double-digit gains were Aware/Columbia’s John Mayer (17-15, +17%) and Interscope Russian girl duo T.A.T.U. (42-23, +48%).
Controversial rapper 50 Cent’s major label bow on Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, which hits the streets this Thursday (2/6), is a lock for #1 on next week’s album chart.
